Sela Pass to Tawang

Ride through the mighty Eastern Himalayas from the Sela Pass region to Tawang, a high-altitude journey spanning approximately 168 kilometers. This 3-day solo motorcycle adventure now primarily utilizes the recently inaugurated Sela Tunnel for all-weather connectivity, reducing travel time. The trip takes you past the historic Jaswant Garh, the serene Sangestar Tso, and up to the towering Bumla Pass at 15,200 ft. Ideal for experienced riders, the best time to undertake this trip is from April to October, though early April may still see snowfall at higher passes. Expect a fuel budget of around ₹515.

⚠️ While the Sela Tunnel provides all-weather connectivity, watch for black ice on the old Sela Pass road if taking a detour, and be aware of potential acute mountain sickness (AMS) due to sudden altitude changes. Recent snowfall in late March 2026 at Sela Pass and Bumla Pass, along with IMD warnings for heavy rain in April, suggest caution, especially for early April travel. Additionally, an urgent high-altitude public advisory was issued on May 17, 2026, due to warnings of a possible Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) from the Khangri Glacier region. Travelers are advised to avoid riverbanks along Tawang Chu and Mago Chu basins, suspend non-essential movement across high-altitude routes during heavy rainfall, and avoid crossing flooded streams or weakened bridges.
