Leh to Padum

Ride from the Indus Valley into the heart of Zanskar via the spectacular Suru Valley. This 3-day motorcycle adventure traverses the moonscapes of Lamayuru and offers front-row views of the massive Drang Drung Glacier. Experience the raw isolation of Rangdum and the ancient monastic culture of Padum on this trans-Himalayan odyssey. The Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road is an alternative route. As of August 9, 2026, the Leh to Padum section via Nimmo is closed time-bound, with a police advisory for 4x4 vehicles near Shinku La pass due to slippery surfaces. Note that the Manali-Leh highway, which connects to the Zanskar valley route, officially reopened for light motor vehicles on May 14, 2026. As of late July 2026, the Darcha-Sarchu section is fully open with two-way traffic. The Srinagar-Leh highway is open, but as of early August 2026, Zojila Pass is time-bound with 15-minute halts for ongoing road work between 9 AM and 6 PM. For Indian citizens, the traditional Inner Line Permit (ILP) has been replaced by a mandatory Environment & Development Fee (EDF) as of 2026, required to visit restricted areas beyond Leh. Foreign travelers still need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for some restricted areas, however, Zanskar Valley is permit-free for foreign nationals. Check conditions before travel.
